🎲 Astragalomancy – Dice Divination
Astragalomancy is an ancient form of divination that reveals guidance by casting dice, dominoes, or other marked objects. The numbers that appear are believed to reflect hidden patterns of fate and intuition.
🔮 How to Perform the Dice Reading
- Draw a circle about 28–30 cm (11–12 inches) in diameter on a sheet of plain paper.
- Sit quietly and focus on the question you wish guidance about.
- Hold two dice in your hand while concentrating on the question, either silently or aloud.
- Shake the dice and cast them into the circle.
- Add together the numbers showing on the top of the dice and consult the meaning below.
✨ Important Notes
- Dice that land outside the circle are ignored.
- If only one die lands inside the circle, you may still use the number shown.
- If both dice fall outside the circle, cast them one more time.
- If the dice fall outside the circle again, the reading cannot be made that day. It is said that the energies are not aligned for divination at that moment.
Traditionally, practitioners say that the prediction revealed by the dice may begin to unfold within nine days.

What Is Astragalomancy?
Astragalomancy is a form of divination that interprets the results produced by casting dice, marked bones, or similar objects. It is closely related to cleromancy, the broader practice of seeking guidance through the casting of lots.
The name comes from the Greek word astragalos, referring to the ankle or knucklebone of a hoofed animal. Before familiar cube-shaped dice became widespread, people commonly used the naturally shaped ankle bones of sheep and goats for games, rituals, and divination.
Every throw created a combination that could be compared with established meanings or interpreted intuitively by the reader.
The Ancient Origins of Dice Divination
The exact origins of casting objects for divination are impossible to identify. Simple objects such as bones, stones, sticks, shells, and marked pieces could be carried easily and used to create seemingly random results.
Knucklebones called astragaloi became especially common throughout the ancient Mediterranean and Near East. They were used in children’s games, gambling, religious offerings, and methods of seeking divine guidance.
Unlike modern cubic dice, an astragalus had four sides on which it could naturally land. These sides were traditionally assigned the values 1, 3, 4, and 6. Because the bone was not perfectly symmetrical, each result did not necessarily have an equal chance of appearing.
Archaeologists have found marked astragali at religious and funerary sites, suggesting that these objects sometimes held meanings beyond ordinary entertainment.
Astragalomancy in Ancient Greece
In parts of the ancient Greek world, people cast astragali and compared the resulting numbers with written oracles.
Some surviving dice-oracle inscriptions present different number combinations alongside the name of a deity and a short message. A person could approach the oracle with a question, cast the bones, calculate the result, and locate the corresponding answer.
The oracle might promise success, encourage the seeker to continue, warn of delays, or advise abandoning a particular plan. The throw was understood not simply as chance, but as a method through which divine guidance could be revealed.
Astragali were also given as offerings at sanctuaries and placed in graves. Their presence reflects their connection with fate, uncertainty, protection, play, and the mysterious forces believed to influence human life.
From Knucklebones to Modern Dice
Over time, carved and manufactured dice gradually replaced animal bones in many divination systems. Practitioners began using numbered cubes, marked dice, or sets of dice designed for particular oracles.
Dice divination developed in different forms across numerous cultures. The number of dice, method of casting, and meaning assigned to each result vary considerably between traditions.
A modern reading may interpret:
- The number shown on each individual die
- The total produced by several dice
- Repeated numbers or matching combinations
- Odd and even results
- Dice landing inside or outside a marked area
- The position and distance between the dice
Some systems provide a fixed message for every possible total, while intuitive readers consider how the numbers relate to the question being asked.
How to Prepare for a Dice Reading
Before casting the dice, choose a question or situation that you genuinely wish to understand. Clear questions usually produce more useful reflections than repeatedly asking whether something will simply happen.
You may ask:
- What energy surrounds this situation?
- What am I overlooking?
- What should receive my attention?
- What may happen if I continue along my current path?
- What approach would be most helpful?
Take a moment to settle your mind and focus on one question. Cast the dice once, record the result, and read its message carefully before deciding whether further clarification is needed.
Understanding Your Result
Each number carries its own symbolic qualities. A single result may represent beginnings, partnership, creativity, stability, change, responsibility, reflection, power, or completion.
Repeated numbers can intensify a particular message. Different numbers appearing together may describe several influences working within the same situation.
The meaning should always be considered alongside:
- The question you asked
- Your immediate reaction to the result
- Events already unfolding around you
- Any pattern appearing in repeated readings
- The choices and actions still available to you
Keep a record of your casts in a divination journal. Writing down the date, question, result, and later outcome can help you build a personal relationship with the numbers and notice how their messages appear in your life.
Is the Future Fixed?
Astragalomancy can reveal the present direction of a situation, but it does not remove free will. A warning creates an opportunity to respond differently, while a favorable result may reveal potential that still requires action.
Treat your dice reading as a symbolic message and a prompt for honest reflection—not as an unavoidable command. Important medical, financial, legal, or mental health decisions should always be discussed with an appropriate professional.
