Card Significator in Cartomancy

In playing card divination, a significator is a card chosen to represent the person asking the question—the querent. This card acts as a symbolic anchor within the reading and can reveal how the querent is connected to the situation being explored.

Traditionally, Kings represent adult men, Queens represent adult women, and Jacks represent younger people. The suit is then selected based on astrology, personality traits, or physical characteristics that best match the querent.

The significator may appear naturally during the spread or be intentionally placed before the reading begins. When it appears among the other cards, it offers additional insight into the querent’s role in the situation.

How the Position of the Significator Matters

  • Center of the spread: The querent is deeply involved in the situation.
  • Near the edge of the spread: The querent is less directly involved or observing events from a distance.
  • Appearing later in the spread: The situation may still be developing or approaching its conclusion.
